The model for boutique student accommodation provider, Make Space, is to re-imagine existing buildings as distinctive, co-living accommodation for both students and those in work.
Taking the literal meaning of Make Space, and the brief for a concept that could be applied cost-effectively and rapidly to shared amenity areas over more than one site across the UK, Naomi commissioned a graphic design that manipulated the perception of space and had it printed on ply wood sheets, components of a panelling system that developed the idea from two dimensions into three.
Installed in the central lounge, this system has a secondary function of attenuating sound, balancing the scale of co-living with a cosy feel of home while extrusions harmoniously form a bar and DJ booth.
A landscape mural in the window-less gym fulfils the same task of manipulating perceptions of space and light and provides engagement with feel-good nature while chalkboard walls in club lounges allow for expressions of “ownership”.
A robust stained ply and concrete kitchen in the shared dining room is burnished by the historical elegance of a Flemish still life while the screening room is softly padded with its collection of bespoke scarlet velvet love seats.
