Cardiff is an acoustic city, the capital of a nation whose voice is its most resonant export.
Home to Spillers, “the oldest record shop in the world”, Cardiff has been midwife to celebrated bands Catatonia, Super Furry Animals and Manic Street Preachers - to name but few - and nurtures three major music schools: Cardiff University School of Music, Cardiff Music School and International Music School Cardiff.
Cardiff’s distinctive euphonic character, combined with a rich folklore heritage and textile traditions, informed Naomi’s branding and interiors concept for The Fitzalan.
Highlights include a specially commissioned “Welsh dragon tattoo” from Welsh tattoo artist, Matt Faulkner of Sota Tattoo, applied across the bespoke Reception desk; pure wool cushions and throws from textile mill Melin Tregwynt, located since the 17th Century on Wales’ Pembrokeshire Coast; a fireplace – a first for purpose built student accommodation, faced in slate (natch!); a rehearsal room, painstakingly assembled by Naomi’s team and consisting of free-to-use musical instruments and a collection of vinyl and vintage hi-fi equipment from across the UK; a bespoke gold-sequined DJ booth and timber and brass-detailed bar.
Accommodation is completed with a generous study, where walls roughly painted with chalkboard paint allow for group learning and in a colour scheme to promote concentration; a kitchen/dining room, featuring cabinetry that both echoes and subverts the classic Welsh dresser; and a multi-functional screening room and work-out studio.
Wayfinding signage, designed by Siobhan Frost of This Works, completes the scheme.
